Nichols: we encourage students to get some sort of secondary education, CC into UW, about 20% for remediation Landen: Outreach in Casper Nichols: outreach efforts are strong, need to analyze offerings at UW – Casper; referenced handout 059, plan for budget reduction at UW; fully reduced by $45M over 2 years, plan implemented and kept up to date, eliminated 102 vacancies, FY 18 plan, reduced $10M from block grant, efficiency relook, purchasing was biggest savings, reduction complete, annual figures Larsen: student health reduction? Nichols: reduced 3 positions Sommers: 2018 chart good overview, would like to see cuts by college over the 2 years just completed Nichols: not sure there is a picture of those 2 years Burkhart: pg. 5 of plan, 900 series $18M on consulting, for 19/20 plan? Nichols: as efficiencies are used, noted and tracked, explain some line items Burns: 370 positions how many vacant? Vehicle management? Nichols: 120 were vacant, ran separation/retirement program, 1st one staff, 2nd one more faculty, 3rd RIF, consolidate attrition Jewell: vehicles are purchased, maximizing fleet Wilson: athletics cut? Jewell: medium sized consulting firm, focus on higher education and health care, $22.5M for installation, efficiency study, Nicholas: copy of efficiency study from Huron requested Nichols: 30 recommendations from Huron – viable; Jewell: hardware and implementation $30M Nichols: student graduation success; program review; 5 academic programs eliminated Burkhart: added programs? Nichols: none to date; workforce oriented; strategic relook Dockstader: new perception of UW, Flagship programs? Nichols: top 10 programs, strong ag, research and natural resources emphasis, large programs education and business, health sciences – strong nursing and pharmacy programs Wilson: programs eliminated Nichols: staff availability of programs as phased out, intro courses still have, grow global engagements, eliminated outreach school – continues with outreach efforts, too many duplications, strategic plan booklet, goals, new program starts are tied to the workforce state needs, curriculum review process may indicate development of more rounded education, student loss due more to financial and not sure what they want, exploratory program, marginal cost to bring a student on, UW very affordable for nursing, modest program fee Sommers: shortage fields – nursing and teachers; role UW takes? Nichols: clinicals important part of program, hospitals will recruit from students, X: Discussed nursing student placement, programs to keep nurses in state, e.g., B.S.,, They can’t control the market in the region. Sommers: Ask to keep retention of students in programs in the state and have performance indicators. Thinks performance indicates short in plan Nichols: Hired JSK? to help with plan for housing that will be available shortly. It is critical need. Larsen: Concern about the quality of private housing for students. Suggest work with city and University. Have had discussions? Nichols: Yes - they have town-gown relations discussions. They have talked about areas of city that is problem for substandard. Mayor of Laramie: City realizes issue. Performed a study in 2013. The city’s goal is to create a rental housing ordinance. Driskill: What are plans for parking? Nichols: They will soon engage with consultant to student parking and transit. Includes where students are parking. Driskill: Logical to do this. Hastert: Do students have mechanism for students if have substandard housing issues? Nichols: ASUW do have a avenue through an attorney. VP Student Affairs also can be involved. Hastert: What is UW doing about sexual assault issues? Nichols: Sexual assault and safety is a big issue. Has as task force, running No More campaign, meeting with students’ specifically lighting, landscaping and quick response. Any time there is a sexual response reported she meets with campus personnel to discuss. Driskill: What are the numbers on sexual assaults? Also the city? Trend line? Blackburn: Seen a slight increase in past year in part to ease of reporting and awareness. Statistics are available on web site. Burns: Asked about “poles” and panic button. What happens? Blackburn: Connected to UW police department. Make students feel more comfortable. Also looking at an app that would provide geographic location. Burns: Response time? Blackburn: Can produce Nicholas: Availability of Housing Plan Nichols: 10 year plan, Consultant hired to assess where UW is today and where UW is in comparison with other institutions, will present in January Nicholas: Would like to receive as soon as possible so JAC could review for possible assistance Nichols: Will need financial resources Dockstader: Cited data on Outreach for wrestling in Star Valley Larsen: It is the area of state that concerns him the most. Synkowski: Governor Letter of commitment $4M, role of UW, computing for all, site credit, climatic credit Nichols: Cheyenne LEADS involvement, community college roadmaps with UW, 190 agreements, 2 plus 2, office of transfer relations, degree completion program, education attainment goal Sommers: demographics and work force, 2 + 2 program great, unsuccessful student’s help?
